Kinetics and mechanism of the bis(cyclopentadienyl)vanadium chloride-catalyzed amalgam reduction of carbon monoxide to methane

A study has been made of the kinetics of the Cp/sub 2/VCl/sub 2/-catalyzed amalgam reduction of carbon monoxide to methane in dimethylformamide containing phenol as the proton donor. It is shown that reaction occurs in a thin surface layer of the amalgam, and may therefore be regarded as a typical electrochemical reaction. A kinetic scheme for the catalyzed reaction is presented.
