Kinetics of the methanation of carbon monoxide on a nickel catalyst

The kinetics of the methanation of carbon monoxide on NKM-4A nickel catalyst have been studied and an equation has been obtained which represents the rate of the process over a wide range of variation in the concentrations of the components. It is shown that when hydrogen is replaced by deuterium an inverse kinetic isotope effect is observed in the reaction. A stagewise scheme is substantiated, according to which the nickel surface is coated predominantly by carbon monoxide and the fragments CH and OH. From the stagewise scheme a kinetic equation results which agrees with the experimentally observed relationships.
