Measurements of PAN, a highly sensitive tracer for photochemical oxidant chemistry

Photochemical air pollution was first observed during the late 1940's in the Los Angeles area, and is now known to derive from the action of sunlight on hydrocarbons and oxides of nitrogen. Elevated levels of undesirable secondary pollutants, with identifiable effects on human health, vegetation and amenity may be formed such as ozone, peroxyacetyl nitrate (PAN) and aerosols. In this paper the authors report on measurements of PAN and ozone at a rural location in Eastern Canada. The measurements of PAN started in June 1984, while the ozone measurements are performed by Environment Canada's Environmental Protection Service as part of the routine NAPS network. While data collection is continuing, the authors describe the methods employed and discuss the implications of the data with respect to the long range transport of nitrogen compounds and the occurrence of photochemical pollution at this rural site.
