Grid system for external insulation tanker

Esso Research and Engineering Co. designed a grid system (constructed of nickel alloy steel or like material) to secure an external insulation to the hull of a cryogenic or LNG tanker throughout its cargo section to help solve the problems of steel embrittlement and reduce the cost of such designs as independent or self-supporting integrated or membrane tanks. This grid system will consist of intersecting frames or firring members attached to the hull directly or bolted through steel plate bars welded to the hull. The external insulation, preferably polyurethane foam or blocks, is then fitted, foamed, or sprayed within the lattice spaces formed by the grid.
