Alpha Components Corp. and Energy Resources Co. Inc. are assembling two energy-conversion packages, mobile and stationary, that produce power and useful fuels from biomass and wastes. The mobile pyrolysis unit, to be field-tested in 1980, will incorporate a 400-hp gas turbine operating on low-Btu gas obtained as a by-product of the unit's pyrolysis. The turbine itself supplies the power to dry and heat forest wastes for the recovery of valuable liquid fuels via pyrolysis. On order by the State of California, the mobile pyrolysis unit offers an economical way of recovering energy from isolated waste sources. The second energy-conversion project involves a stationary power-plant package that will generate about 800 kW of power from landfill gas in Glendale, Calif. In both projects, the gas turbines incorporate new design techniques to achieve the low pressure ratio needed for efficient operation on low-Btu waste gases.
