A 22.4 megawatt wood-burning cogeneration facility provides all the steam and power needs of Dow's Midland, MI chemical plant while reducing annual fuel costs by 25%. Low cost and abundant supplies from Dow's forest land as well as purchased residues from wood and paper companies ensure a long-term fuel supply for the $35 million investment for equipment and power distribution modifications. The company purchases power and operates four backup gas-fired boilers during the annual two-week state inspection. Dow estimates a three- to five-year payback period.
