Effect of annihilation of quasinuclear baryonium states in higher partial waves

The cross section for the annihilation of a nucleon (N) and a antinucleon (N-bar) from continuum states, as well as the annihilation widths and shifts of the levels of a quasinuclear NN-bar system with orbital momentum l = 0, is calculated within the framework of the coupled-channel model. It is shown that although the annihilation cross section is large (it is comparable with the unitary limit at nonrelativistic energies), the annihilation widths GAMMA/sub an/ of the quasinuclear states are small (GAMMA/sub an/ = 1--10 MeV at l = 2). It is observed that annihilation decreases the resonance width, and the physical cause of this phenomenon is explained.
