Energy and water management in western irrigated agriculture

Book ·
OSTI ID:5042790
This book focuses on the prospects for irrigated agriculture under conditions of increasing energy scarcity. Economic and technical issued affecting irrigation management decisions are considered, focusing on energy requirements and adjustments to relatively high-cost energy. An assessment of alternative forms of energy for irrigation pumping emphasizes wind and solar energy. Because water and livestock activities cannot be separated in much of the western U.S. the energy intensity of livestock production in irrigated areas is compared with that in nonirrigated and range livestock production. Potential adjustments of agricultural production to energy and water shortages are examined and the competition of irrigation with other uses of water and energy are evaluated.
