High-tech products on the way from the Bureau of Mines

The surge of interest in innovative mining systems and products has resulted in prestigious organizations jumping in to establish their own presence in this area. Until now, however, the US Bureau of Mines has channeled most of the efforts of well-qualified engineers and scientists to produce a broad selection of instruments and equipment. A few developments from the Pittsburgh Research Center at Bruceton, PA, three of which are described here, embody the latest scientific concepts pouring out of government defense and space research. These will assist private industry in making coal mining not only safer but also more productive.
