Bayou scores high availability in first months of operation. [300-MW Bayou Cogeneration Plant, Houston, TX]
The 300 MW Bayou Cogeneration Plant at the Bayport Industrial Complex southeast of Houston went fully operational in April. Already it has registered three important distinctions: (1) it is one of the very largest cogeneration systems ever built in this country; (2) it came on line on schedule and without any major changes in technical concept or objectives; and (3) it registered unusually high availability percentages (92, 95 and 97) during its first three months of full operation. The only important change since the $100 million venture was announced on September 7, 1983 is nontechnical. It has acquired a new partner, Houston Natural Gas InterNorth. Originally, there were only two partners. Big Three Industries, the chemical giant, owns 51% of the system. General Electric, the turnkey constructor, owned the remaining 49%. Ladd Petroleum, a GE subsidiary, in concert with Houston based American Pipeline Company, will supply 75% of the cogen system's natural gas requirements. HNG InterNorth will supply the other 25%, and has purchased a 34% share of the project from GE. General Electric retains its responsibilities as system supplier and as contractor for the design, construction, operation and maintenance of the facility.
