The high density projection chamber for the Delphi experiment at LEP

The status of the HPC project for the DELPHI electromagnetic shower counter at LEP is described, including a new construction method for the lead converter structure. Results from test beam measurement on the transverse and longitudinal shower development are presented, together with performance figures for spatial and angular resolution. The HPC is a promising calorimeter for colliding beam experiments. A cheap and reliable technique to realize it as a large scale detector was found and proved successful. This new detector development offers a good energy and an excellent space resolution. At granularities in the range of millimeters the space and angular resolution is entirely dominated by the granularity. A space resolution of 0.7 mm and an angular resolution of 38 mrad/vE have been measured. Therefore detailed studies on the development of showers are possible. They are the basis for a good separation of hadrons from electromagnetic showers and of nearby showers.
