Study of low-temperature interaction of MoO/sub 3/ with CCl/sub 4/ vapor in presence of activated carbon is of interest both for extraction of molybdenum from its oxygen compounds and for low-temperature processes of gas-phase surface treatment before deposition of inorganic coatings on steels and alloys containing molybdenum and carbon. We show that chlorination at 573 K in presence of active carbon proceeds by a mechanism whereby active chlorinating particles are formed from CCl/sub 4/ molecules under the influence of carbon. Analysis showed that these particles take active part in extraction of two elements from MoO/sub 3/: molybdenum and oxygen, in the form of two volatile compounds, MoO/sub 2/Cl/sub 2/ and COCl/sub 2/.
