A simple and reliable preionizing system obtained by combining the mesh cathode method and SiC ceramics has been studied. It was found that a SiC preionizer with a resistivity of 10--20 ..cap omega.. cm was the most suitable for a uniform glow discharge at atmospheric pressure. This preionizing technique has been used for TEA CO/sub 2/ lasers of an airborne ozone differential absorption LIDAR (DIAL) system without any maintenance for more than 3 yrs.
