OSTI ID:5020721
A self mode-locked laser system is described comprising: a semiconductor laser diode having a first facet and a second facet, optical radiation being emitted from the second facet when the diode is driven; an optical system disposed to reflect at least a portion of the optical radiation back into the diode thereby inducing self-coupling in the lase to generate an oscillating light pulse; and an electronic gain means coupled to the laser for controlling the oscillating light pulse in the laser to produce sustained steady-state oscillation, thereby made locking the laser.
