Hydrodynamics of a magnetized plasma in an rf field

The nonlinear interaction of transverse rf and longitudinal low-frequency waves in a magnetized plasma is analyzed. A study is made of cyclotron resonance, in which case the ponderomotive force which couples these waves is dominated by its time-dependent part, which is related to the time dependence of the rf wave amplitude. Under the influence of this force, the nonlinear processes which develop can lead to the formation of shock waves in the cold plasma. If there is a violation of quasineutrality in the strong rf fields, the equations describing the nonlinear processes in the plasma reduce to the Korteweg--de Vries equation.
