Title: Regulation and control of United States ocean dumping: a decade of progress, an appraisal for the future

Part I of this article examines the kinds and quantities of materials currently dumped in US coastal waters and the effects of such dumping on the marine environment. Later sections analyze the Ocean Dumping Act, the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA's) implementing regulations, and the London Dumping Convention. The article also examines the role of the US as a leader in marine protection, and the corresponding role of the EPA and the Corps of Engineers, in the context of recent ocean dumping legislation, regulations, and litigation. 435 references.
