Fluorescence derivatization
Fluorescence derivatization procedures are widely used to enhance the detectability of otherwise nonfluorescent compounds. Most derivatization reactions can be classified as one of the following types: (1) reactions leading to the formation of an extended aromatic ..pi..-electron system, (2) reactions that change te nature of a substituent, (3) complex formation reactions that tie up nonbinding electrons changing the nature of the lowest singlet state, and (4) reactions that involve dissociating a structure from a heavy atom. This review considers some ot the basics of fluorescence analysis and lists important derivatization reactions classified on the basis of the approach used to achieve fluorescence. 1 figure, 10 tables.
