With the announcement of the first sales of their 1.7 MW Hurricane to a combined heat and power (CHP) scheme for a new London teaching hospital, Ruston has extended its range of small gas turbines to cover the full range of the industrial CHP market. This article examines the design and applications of this gas turbine. With an initial ISO baseload rating of 1.7 MW, Hurricane is pitched at an emerging market for small industrial CHP schemes. A look at recent orders in this sector shows that the main customers are smaller industrial sites such as textile mills, breweries, bakeries, and self-contained institutions such as hospitals, hotels, military bases and universities. Another application for which eight further units have been ordered, is as a compact generating plant for ships, replacing the traditional diesel generators.
