Improvements in the methods of fracturing

The process of hydraulically fracturing oil and gas wells has been constantly improved, since the method was first introduced. Research has produced a new fluid called Superfrac, which has caused a re-examination of the ideal properties a fluid should have, and from which other fluids have evolved. The properties which seem most desirable in fracturing fluids are the following: (1) low friction loss through pipe; (2) having high viscosity; (3) excellent adaption for carrying sand; (4) having high pressure loss by friction in the fracture; (5) the circulation loss to be low; (6) the viscosity, in the rock matrix, to be low after it is introduced; and (7) to be easily removed and leaving no residue in the well. The low pressure loss by friction in the pipe, naturally, is conserved by the power of the pump and permits the application of a pressure much higher than that due to the depth of the string.
