Unipolar arc in the hot plasma of a microwave discharge

Journal Article · · Sov. J. Plasma Phys. (Engl. Transl.); (United States)
OSTI ID:5002443
Experiments are reported on the unipolar arcs which occur where metal electrodes come in contact with the hot plasma of a microwave discharge. The arc currents reach values from a few hundred to a few thousand amperes. The time evolution of the arcs and the dependence of the arc current on the position of the electrode, the plasma potential, etc., have been studied. The state of the surface in contact with the plasma has been studied by electron microscopy and by x-ray microspectroscopy.
