It is shown that the most general renormalizable Higgs potential for the adjoint representation phi of SU(n) has extrema only if at most two eigenvalues of phi are different. This result is used to find the symmetry-breaking pattern due to scalar fields in the adjoint and fundamental representations of SU(n).
