Symmetry-breaking patterns in supersymmetric grand unified theories

We study in detail symmetry-breaking patterns in supersymmetric grand unified theories which might admit Witten's ''inverted'' hierarchy. Calculations are done for the Higgs fields belonging to the adjoint representations and group singlets of SU(N), the antisymmetric and symmetric representations and group singlets of SO(N).
