Comeback at Coles Levee

The San Joaquin Valley's N. Coles Levee oil field is preparing for a comeback. It all goes well, the field may set a new production record within the next 3 to 4 yr. Atlantic Richfield Co. (ARCO) is the firm that is initiating the program that may lead to new highs. The program is a massive waterflood in which Atlantic Richfield Co. plans to juggle salt water underlying the surface of the field, removing water from one sand to inject it in a deeper oil sand as means of pushing more oil to the surface. ARCO recently drilled its second water source well to support the flood and may drill 2 more, depending on the need for more water. Plans call for stepping up field-wide injection to about 150,000 bpd of water, putting the water away into some 70 wells, producing oil from some 100 wells. It is believed the entire waterflood program could increase reserves by some 50 to 55 million bbl, with a production rate increase to 18,000 bpd or more in 3 to 4 yr. The field's present production runs around 4,200 bpd.
