The purpose of the Environmental Monitoring and Assessment Program-Estuaries component (EMAP-E) is to estimate the current status, extent, changes, and trends in ecological indicators of the condition of the nation`s estuarine resources on a regional and national basis. Monitoring activities in the Louisianian (Gulf of Mexico) Province focus on measurements describing the benthic community, the fish community, water quality, levels of sediment and tissue contamination, and sediment toxicity. Estuarine monitoring is based on an EMAP-E probability-based sampling design implemented over a 60-day window during July--September of each year. Monitoring activities in the Louisianian Province began in 1991 and have continued annually with 202 sites sampled in 1991, 159 sites sampled in 1992, and 156 sites sampled in 1993. Analyses have been performed to determine associations between the biological indicators and environmental stressors, such as sediment contaminant and hypoxia. Year to year and within sampling season variations have been determined from similar measurements taken at permanent sampling sites.
