Radioactive materials and drinking water supply in a nuclear catastrophe: summary report of the water contamination task group (in German)

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4939427
In 1988 the Minister for Sanitary Affairs established a committee to investigate the effects of a nuclear catastrophe on the drinking water supply. The fields of physics, chemistry, meteorology, geology, hydrology, water technology, medicine, and radiation biology were represented in the study. A summary of the repont of this committee is presented. The report summarizes the present status of drinkIng water in West Germany, the release and propagation of radioactive materials in a nuclear explosion near the ground, release and propagation of radioactive material from extreme incidents in nuclear power plants, behavior of radioactive material in various types of water occurrences, estimation of the contamination to be expected in various water occurrences as the result of a nuclear catastrophe, radiation effects on the population from contaminated drinking water, necessity and possibilities of monitoring contamination of water, and necessity of precautions and the types available.
