RADIOACTIVE CONTAMINATION OF DRINKING WATER ITS CONTROL, EVALUATION, AND REMOVAL

Journal Article · · Vierteljahresschr. Schweiz. Sanitaetsoffiziere
OSTI ID:4714413
Various aspects of radioactivity from fallout in drinking water supplies are discussed in terms of available data collected after nuclear weapons tests and that extrapolated from hypothetical situations resulting from thermonuclear war. The effects of different kinds of radiation on biological systems are also discussed, and the radionuclides likely to be of concern as contaminants of water, as well as their minimum acceptable concentrations, are considered. Specific examples are cited of the degree and kinds of contamination that would be expected after explosions of various magnitude, and the calculated radioactivities of water supplies at subsequent intervals are provided. Methods for reducing contamination of water supplies from fallout are discussed. It is suggested that modern methods of filtration and adsorption used in water purification would remove 50 to 90% of the radioactivity. (H.H.D.)
