Peaceful uses of nuclear explosives. Review paper No. 1. Radioactivity and PNE

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4939396
Published literafure is compiled on the radiation hazards associated with uses of underground nuclear explosions for largescale civil engineering projects, for mining, and for oil and gas stimulation. Following introductory material on cratering and contained nuclear explosion experiments, papers on the following subjects are presented: radioactivity production from underground nuclear explosions (using Plowshare data); the properties of radionuclides arisIng from device components, fission products, and the activation products of the surrounding rock; radiation exposure standards for defining the dose limits to human populations; exposure pathways due to radionuclide migration through soils, surface waters, the atmosphere, and ecosystems; distribution of localized radioactivity from contained and cratering explosions; distribution of fallout from nuclear cratering; precautions to be used during an explosion and on re- entry to the site; and a survey of decontamination methods.
