Measurement of the fission product activity for failed fuel element detection as a contribution to reactor safety of the FRJ-2 (in German)

OSTI ID:4938696
Methods to measure fission product activities for the detection of fueled fuel elements are described. The failed fuel elements can be detected and localized by a fuel element scanning system by measuring the fission product activities in the primary coolant. The methods of neutron measurement, gamma spectroscopy and the precipitation method are described. As an example, activtty measurements are reported which have been carried out in the FRJ-2 (DIDO) in a special reactor experiment (loop test No. 20) according to the precipitation method in order to be able to monitor the fuel elements of the FRJ-2 by means of a selective fission product detection in the coolant. From the results measured in this reactor experiment, optimum operating parameters have been determined for a burst can detection system of the FRJ-2. This system has been designed to indicate fuel element failures in the FRJ-2 by means of the precipitation method. 12 references. (GE)
