BS>The techniques used for sampling and measuring fission product activity in the coolant of reactor systems, for detection of fuel failure, are described. A brief outline is given of detection by electrostatic precipitation, delayed neutron monitoring, and direct gamma activity monitoring. The system for Magnox reactors based on electrostatic precipitation and the PFR system which comprises two independent systems both based on delay neutron monitoring are discussed. Brief reference is made to methods for advanced and high temperature gas-cooled reactors. (UK)
