Facilities for high temperature reactor studies at Harwell

Harwell has been engaged in work in support of the High Temperature Reactor Program in the UK for many years and has thus built up a whole range of facilities and expertise which can be made available to external customers. The specific areas of work are: testing of graphite, fuel particles and fuel assemablies in Material Testing Reactore (such as DIDO and PLUTO) and Dounreay Fast Reactor in both static rigs and gas cooled loops; complete range of post- irradiation examination covering all aspects of mechanical and fission product behavior (this covers the whole spectrum from dealing with individual particles to complete fuel pins); and supporting laboratory studies and assessment studies on particle endurance and fission product behavior. Some of the facilities available for this work are described. (auth)
