Calibration of a Monsanto cascade impactor with a monodisperse aerosol
The performance of a size selective air sampler, the Monsanto cascade impactor, modified for use as an instrument for sizing solid airborne particles in radon monitoring has been studied using monodisperse unit density spheres of methylene blue dye. A colorimetric method of assessing the collected aerosol was used in preference to the commonly used size-count method of calibration. Experimental dat are presented with a description of the method of aerosol generation, mass determination, collection efficiency and wall losses. A three- stage and a twostage arrangement of impactor are discussed and collection efficiency curves presented for the various stages. The performance of the two- stage version agrees closely with the performance predicted from the work of previous experimenters. (auth)
