Positronium photoproduction in the Coulomb field: bound states in the infinite-momentum frame and multi-photon exchange

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4934167
The process of positronium photoproduction in the strong Coulomb field at high energy is investigated in the framework of the Cheng and Wu picture. A formalism to describe bound states in the infinite-momentum frame is developed. In the one-photon exchange approximation the results reduce to those obtained by means of the Weizsacker-Williams method using the positronium decay width. From the calculation of multi-photon exchange corrections a rather unexpected conclusion was drawn: the quantity alpha Z/(q/sup 2/)1 plus or minus 12Z, which is usually treated as the Coulomb amplitude, must be interpreted as the S- matrix element: otherwise serious contradictions arise in the case of para- positronium production. Similar remarks hold true for the pair production process. (auth)
