String picture of the Veneziano amplitude

The quantization of a free light string, whose action is proportional to the surface swept out by the string, coupled to external sources was proposed and connected to the Veneziano amplitude, within the framework of the functional integral formalism. Some details of the string picture are discussed, especially lts functional integral reprcsentation and symmetry properties. The results confirm the possibility of gauge invariant string picture of the external fleld problem. (auth)
