The scattering amplitudes for gravitons, antisymmetric tensors and gauge bosons in the heterotic string are calculated. From these amplitudes the low-energy effective action up to the quartic interactions are derived. Furthermore, the spin connection naturally contains torsion whose sign is unambiguously determined by the string amplitudes are shown. The quartic interaction arising from the pure heterotic string has the form (Tr(F{sup 2} - R{sup 2})){sup 2}, that vanishes when the gauge field is embedded in the spin connection with torsion. In the second part amplitudes for the massless particles are evaluated in Witten's open superstring field theory. The results coincide with the conventional ones except the four-boson amplitude. There is a contact term for the four-boson amplitude arised when two picture changing operators are approaching to each other. It indicates that Witten's open superstring field theory has to be modified to preserve gauge symmetry.
