Can better utility bills save energy?

Journal Article · · Home Energy
OSTI ID:492121
Electric bills are often the only communication between a utility and its customers. As the utility industry moves into a more competitive environment, contact with customers and additional services will be more important. Adding such minor changes as comparative energy consumption information to the bill can help both utility and customer by providing information the customer wants and needs. A recent study by the University of Delaware has provided a better understanding of how to display information so it can be used. This article discusses both the practical aspects of how bills can be changed and what the most important additional information is. Topics include the following: EPA`s program Energy Star Billing; new software; how customers use bills; what information to provide; comparing the comparisons; display preference; comprehension; saving money using comparisons; cost to the utility. 5 refs. 2 figs.
