The reactions during the degassing process are quantitatively studied in the solid state of the systems Nb-N and Nb-O. The results obtained are based on kinetic measurements, equilibrium studies and steady state experiments. the starting materials for these experiments consisted of a solid solution of the gas in the solid metal as well as specimens with oxide or nitride layers on the surface. The systems Ta-O and Ta-N are studied, too. The results show that nitrogen is degassed in the form of N2 molecules, whereas oxygen escapes from the metal in form of volatile oxides. Some quantitative equations are derived, that give the relationship between the maximum nitrogen and oxygen content as a function of the annealing temperature and the partial pressure of nitrogen or oxygen, and water vapor in the recipient. An analysis of the gases before and after melting of niobium and tantalum shows that the degassing reactions which take place in the liquid state are the same as those in the solid state (auth)
