Title: Accelerated site characterization with an innovative miniature portable GC

The EPA has actively encouraged, through the Superfund Innovative Technology Evaluation (SITE) program, investment in and development of site-innovative monitoring technologies. Such initiatives have urged technology developers to push the envelope in the design of faster, more accurate, reliable, and truly field-portable gas chromatography, providing significant cost-saving through accelerated site screening and characterization. A current technology innovation, is the PE Photovac Voyager portable gas chromatograph (GC) which is designed to provide near-real time, accurate, and precise monitoring of environmental parameters, notably for air (including soil vapor extraction), and water media, using headspace analysis. The Voyager is a battery-powered, lightweight, miniature hand-carried GC which incorporates a powerful analytical engine to fast screen and characterize environmental samples for up to forty volatile organic compounds (VOC) listed in EPA Methods 601, 602, and 624. The instrument was set up to analyze soil, water, and air samples taken from a chemical manufacturing site which are known to have high levels of chemical contaminants in groundwater. The purpose of the field study was to determine how well the instrument would cope with a possibly complex, unknown sample and to gain an insight of the contaminants present on-site.
