Elastic and inelastic scattering of α particles from O{sup 16}, Mg{sup 24}, and Si{sup 28}
Differential cross sections were measured for elastic scattering of alpha particles from O/sup 16/, Mg/sup 24/, and Si/sup 28/, using 22.5-Mev alpha particles. SCAT-IV optical-model fits were obtained for these data and evidence derived from the fits indicates that the observed backward angle peaking is at least partially explained by optical-potential focusing. Differential cross sections were also measured for inelastic scattering to the first 5 excited states of O/sup 16/ and Mg/sup 24/ and the first 4 excited states of Si/sup 28/. However, doublets at 6.05--6.13, and 6.92--7.12 Mev in O/sup 16/, 4.12--4.23 Mev in Mg /sup 24/ , and 4.61--4.97 Mev in Si/sup 28/ were unresolved and require special interpretation. Evidence for excitation of the 4.97-Mev state in Si/sup 28/ indicates that it has positive parity, since ( alpha , alpha ') excitation of a O/sup -/state is rigorously forbidden. The phase relationships of the differential cross band structure of the nuclei and the excitation moles of unnatural-parity states. (auth)
