S.C. legislature rejects bid to keep Barnwell open

After much speculation and with both sides of the Barnwell issue in the state legislature claiming they would win, the low-level waste site in Barnwell County, S.C. was to close to generators outside the Southeast Low-Level Waste Compact on June 30, 1994. The bill that would have extended out-of-region access to the LLW site lost in the state House of Representatives by only a small margin.
