Analysis of bonded composite repairs to cracked compact specimens
- National Chiao Tung Univ. (Taiwan, Province of China). Mechanical Engineering Dept.
Stress intensity factor of cracked aluminum plates symmetrically repaired with bonded composite patches is studied via both analytical and experimental approaches. A method is proposed for the determination of stress intensity factor of cracked plates repaired with bonded composite patches via a strain approach. Strain near crack tip is determined in a finite element analysis and then used to compute the stress intensity factor of the repaired structure using the proposed method. Tests of aluminum C-T specimens symmetrically repaired with bonded composite patches are performed and the experimental results used to validate the proposed method. The effects of patch thickness on stress intensity factor are studied. It has been found that the proposed method can predict stress intensity factor of bonded composite repair of plates with edge cracks well. Composite patch thickness has great beneficial effects on reducing stress intensity factor of repaired plates.
