Notched specimen for a short fatigue crack

Journal Article · · Exper. Tech.; (United States)

A method, based on measuring crack-opening displacements at constant-load amplitudes, for studying the short crack (100-200 microns) growth at the edge of a notched specimen is proposed. The geometry of the single-edge-notched specimens, and the preparation of the specimens for evaluation are described. The crack-tip displacements are measured using laser interferometric strain gage (LISG); the LISG set-up employed in this study consists of a 10 mW HeNe laser, silicon photocell circuits mounted in light-tight instrument boxes, and an aluminum structure for housing the photocells and laser. Analysis of the crack-opening displacement and stress intensity factor data reveals that the proposed method is useful for investigating short crack growth in notched specimens. 6 references.
