THE EQUILIBRIUM STATE OF THE GAS BEHIND A STRONG HYDROGEN SHOCK
Technical Report

OSTI ID:4843432
The equilibrium states of the gas behind a strong hydrogen shock are computed for ranges of shock Mach numbers. The results show that the vibrational degree is fully excited when the temperature exceeds 3 x 103 deg K and ionization becomes noticeable only after the gas is completely dissociated. In the relaxation region, a continuous temperature drop occurs. When there is ionization, the pressure exhibits a minimum before attaining the final equilibrium value. The influence of the initial conditions and of the partition functions on the equilibrium state of the gas is discussed. (D.L.C.)
