Cooling characteristics of a PAG polymer quenchant and its application on medium carbon steel
- Univ. of Indonesia, Depok (Indonesia)
The cooling characteristics of an aqueous solution of a polyalkylene glycol - PAG copolymer at various concentrations and its influence on hardness and distortion of medium carbon steel (ASSAB 760 - equivalent to AISI 1045) is discussed here. This work was performed using cooling curves obtained with an ASSAB 760 steel probe which is a modification of the method described in ISO 9950. Hardness testing was also performed on the same steel probe used for cooling curve analysis. Distortion effect were determined using a modified Navy - C ring test piece. These results showed that increasing concentrations of the aqueous PAG quenchant will result in corresponding decreases in distortion and only slight decrease in hardness of the ASSAB 760 steel test piece relative to a pure water quenchant.
