The replacement of a conventional quench oil with an aqueous polyalkylene glycol (PAG) polymer quenchant for the production of dies used for the production of forged automotive valves is discussed. The advantages of the immersion time quenching system (ITQS) technology used in this application is also discussed. The focus of this study is: microstructural comparison of grain size, variation in surface to core hardness and lifetime assessment of the dies used in valve production.
