A measuring-computing acoustical noise analysis system has been developed for the control of cooling capacity of quenchants. The work frequency range of 0 to 20 kc is divided into 200 channels. The width of each channel is 100 c/s. It has been shown that each heat transfer mode (film and nucleate boiling) has a characteristic frequency. Low frequencies are inherent to film boiling. High frequencies occur at the start of boiling and shock boiling. These experiments permit the determination of the optimum concentration of a poly(alkylene glycol) quenchant where the most intensive and uniform cooling is reached. The determination is necessary when using intensive steel quenching methods.
