Laboratory test of cooling power of polymer quenchants

Conference ·
OSTI ID:484251

The effects of shape, size and material of probe on the cooling curves in polymer quenching are studied experimentally. The strong influence of the probe shape and the high sensitivity of silver probes are confirmed. It is clarified that the agitation of polymer quenchants and the use of cylindrical probes with hemispherical ends result in excellent reproducibility. Besides, calculating the heat transfer coefficient and/or heat flux from the cooling curve data of the silver probe is very easy because of the probe temperature uniformity. It is concluded that the cooling curve test using a cylindrical silver probe with hemispherical ends and a forced connection bath is more suitable for determining the cooling power of aqueous polymer solutions.
