BINARY CARBIDE-METAL SYSTEMS. Progress Report No. 4

No reaction or solid solutions were observed between UC and Cu in fired mixtues, and a qualitative phase diagram with a binary eutectic very near to the Cu end is presented. The U-- C--Co system was investigated by x-ray and metallographic examination of fired UC-- Co mixtures, and a tentative solid-state ternary diagram is presented. The UC--UFe/sub 2/ system was found to form a binary eutectic sys-tem with no appreclable soild solubility, and the eutectic comaposition and melting point were determined. (D. L.C.)
