EFFECT OF CELL-FREE TUMOR MATERIALS ON IRRADIATED AND NEWBORN ANIMALS

Whole-body irradiation of rats with 250 r increased the incidence of mammary tumors over a 16-month observation period. Females of this inbred strain developed these tumors spontaneously, and irradiation, in addition to augmenting their formation, promoted development of other types of mammary tumors, a glioma, and a fibrosarcoma of skin. Injection of culture fluid from tumor cells grown in vitro did not enhance development of tumors in irradiated rats or in nonirradiated controls. In fact, injections of fluid reduced the incidence of tumors in irradiated rats, suggesting a protective effect, but because of the small number of animals studied the results cannot be considered significant. The spontaneous rat mammary tumor, originally an adenofibroma, changed to a fibrosarcoma after 3 to 5 transplantations in rats of the same strain. Supernatant fiuids and tissue culture fluids from spontaneously occurring tumors in dogs and cats when injected into newborn animals of the same species did not induce tumors in the recipients.
