THE COMBINED PROTECTIVE EFFECT OF CYSTEAMINE AND GLYCERINE IN X-IRRADIATED T1 PHAGES (in German)

The plaque forming ability of coliphage T1 suspended in glycerol solutions was inactivated by x rays. A marked decrease in radiosensitivity was observed which was highest at a glycerol molarity of 10. At higher concentrations the protective effect decreases but this decrease could be avoided by adding cysteamine before irradiation. It was found that the protection afforded by 0.15 M cysteamine was additive to that observed with glycerol from zero concentration to 10 M. The highest ratio of sensitivity obtained was 6 as observed between T1 phage suspended in a cysteamine-- glycerol-- broth mixture and broth-suspended T1 without any addition. Tentative explanations are given for the remarkably efficient radioprotective actions found and some consequences thereof for further work are indicated. (auth)
