GRAIN BOUNDARY SLIDING IN ALUMINIUM AND ITS BINARY ALLOYS

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4838786
Mg bicrystals to test a mechanism for sliding proposed in pre vious work. The mechanism relates sliding to slip crosging grain boundaries. An investigation was also made of the effect of a second phase existing in various distributions on grain boundary sliding. Al--3% Cu was used for this study. It was found that for tests at similar strain rates very large differences in grain boundary sliding rate resulted from differences in heat treatment. The nature of stresses at the triple points of sliding grain boundaries was also investigated using tricrystals of Al and Al--Mg. (auth)
